We made it! After months of planning, we are headed to Guatemala to begin living the life we have intentionally created for ourselves.
I am currently sitting between the two people I will begin this journey with. On my right is a 13 year old girl who is gazing out the window of the airplane and trying to take in the clouds and the aerial scenery before her heavy eyelids betray her and put her to sleep. She is my “niece”; a part of my chosen family. This is her second trip with me. She has an intense interest in any culture that is different than hers and is giddy at the idea of spending three whole weeks exploring and learning. I look at her and realize how lucky I am to have a young person in my life that is so very excited to grasp this opportunity to travel….. and how lucky we both are that her parents trust both of us enough to say “have fun! see you in a few weeks!” to their only daughter.
On my left is my fiancé- the same man I approached many months ago with the words “so…. I have this crazy idea….”. He listened to my idea, smiled, and said “ok. Let’s try it.” He has never questioned my idealism, never shown any inkling that he thinks I am crazy. He jumped right in with me and did his best to keep pace with my frantic dream planning. He proposed just weeks before we left New York City, letting me know that I have a true partner in crime for the rest of my travel-filled life. I am very lucky to have such a person by my side.
Our plane just lifted into the air and with it, our adventure. I am not sure of where exactly we will stay tomorrow night, where we will be next month, or how our plans to keep this lifestyle afloat will pan out but there is one thing I am very certain of…. Our life is already absolutely and completely awesome.
